As the Greek myth goes, Persephone was gathering flowers in the Vale when she was taken by Hades into the Underworld. Zeus commanded Hades to release her, but since Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds (the forbidden fruit) she was forced to stay in the Underworld for 4 months out of the year.
